Playground at a park

The City is currently considering a new name for the city park at 823 5th Avenue East, beside 8th Street East, previously known as Ryerson Park. See recent reports about this process on this page under 'Report Links'.

In 2021, the City of Owen Sound adopted Policy No. CS087 - Naming and Re-Naming Policy for City Parks and Facilities, establishing transparent and consistent criteria for naming and renaming City parks and facilities. This policy ensures that any review or change to existing park names follows a structured process, with clear requirements for applicants and opportunities for community and expert consultation.

In summary, the Policy provides:

General Naming Policy Guidelines

  • Park and facility names should reflect positively on the City and align with the City of Owen Sound’s values.
  • Names should not be repeated or too similar, so they don’t cause confusion—especially for emergency responders.
  • The City Clerk keeps an official list of park and facility names to prevent duplication.
  • City Council makes the final decision on all park and facility names.
  • Any naming or renaming must follow the approved process, including public notice and consultation.

Policy Naming Preferences

The Policy gives preference to the following:

  • Names that describe where the park is or what makes the area unique.
  • Neighbourhood names, nearby streets, natural features, or well-known nearby places.
  • Names may also recognize important historical events with citywide, regional, or national significance.
  • In some cases, names can honour individuals, families, or objects with a strong historical connection to the site.

In the case of the park at 823 5th Ave. E., Council has asked that a name with a locational reference be given priority.

How the Community Can Take Part:

This park naming project includes two phases of public engagement.

Phase 1: Suggesting Names

In the first phase, the City is inviting the community to suggest possible names for the park.

Four names have already been put forward for consideration:

  • Old School Park
  • Eighth Street Park
  • Boyd Street Park
  • “Friendship Land” in Anishinaabe – Ningaawendam Miikana

During this phase, residents can share additional name ideas they feel reflect the park, the neighbourhood, or the community’s history and values. All suggestions received will be reviewed and compiled for the next step.

Please register for an account with this OurCity Owen Sound online engagement platform to submit your park name suggestion. Registration is required so we may contact you if additional information or clarification is needed, or for project updates. Personal information collected through registration will be kept confidential and will not be shared or used for any other purpose.

Phase 2: Consulting on Suggested Names

In the second phase, the City will ask the public for input on suggested names from Phase 1.

This feedback will help inform City Council before a final decision is made.

Final Steps

After public engagement completes, the results of the input along with other feedback will be reported to the Community Services Committee and Council for consideration.

The City will give at least 10 days’ notice before Council makes a final decision on the park's name. Please 'follow this project' (subscribe for updates right from this page!) page to stay up to date on the park's name.
