Mayor's Budget

What the Mayor Has to Do About the Budget

  • The Mayor has to make the city’s budget and show it to the Council before February 1.
  • If the Mayor doesn’t do this by February 1, then the Council will make the budget instead.
  • If the Council wants to change the plan, the Mayor can say “no.” But if two-thirds of the Council votes to keep the change, the Mayor’s “no” doesn’t count.
  • The budget is considered “done” after certain time limits, even if the Council doesn’t officially say “yes.”
  • If extra taxes are needed during the year, the Mayor must show the Council a new plan.
  • The Mayor can’t give this job to someone else. If the Mayor doesn’t do it, the job is lost, not shared.
